State Fire Marshall Urges Proper Care of Live Christmas Trees

Christmas-tree-225x300Make sure your live Christmas tree has plenty of water. That’s one of several pieces of advice from Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office to ensure the most wonderful time of the year stays that way.

According to the National Fire Protection Agency, one in every four Christmas tree fires is caused by a heating source placed too close. Experts caution a small fire can quickly get out of control with a live tree, especially if it is dried out.

Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson urges those who still need to buy a tree to choose the freshest one possible. Harvest at a Christmas tree farm, or select a freshly cut tree that hasn’t been on the sales lot very long. Needles should be fresh and green and should not fall off when touched.

Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1 to 2 inches away from the base of the trunk. Also make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source and does not block an exit. The tree stand should be filled with water at all times. Add water daily, as live Christmas trees dry out quickly when they are brought into a home. A dry tree can quickly go up in flames.

If you’re using an artificial tree, make sure the manufacturer identifies it as fire retardant.

Examine all lights and decorations. Lights are either for indoor or outdoor use only, while some may be used in either location. Make sure the lights are appropriate for the venue. Replace any strings of lights that are worn out, in addition to broken cords and broken bulbs.

Wires should be checked periodically and replaced if they feel warm to the touch. Always turn the tree lights off before leaving home or going to bed. A timer can be used to keep track of when the tree is on.

Also, never decorate the tree with lit candles, and avoid placing open flame near the tree.
