The Culver Community Schools Corporation has identified a few areas for improvement. School improvement plans from both the elementary and middle/high schools were approved by the school board Monday.
Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell says ISTEP scores still haven’t been released publicly, but both schools plan to work on improving their math and language scores. “That’s always a goal, but certainly after the last round of ISTEP scores, with the new test and the relatively new standards, scores aren’t anywhere near where anybody wants them to be,” he says. “So we go back and we dive back into the new standards. We take a look at the new testing process, and we try to figure out ways to move our kids forward.”
He adds the elementary school is also working to improve its attendance rate. “Not that it’s been bad, but certainly, when a student’s not in the building, they lose a day of instruction,” he explains. “And so even though we’re at 95-plus-percent attendance rate, we’d still like to see that a little higher. So [Principal Erin] Proskey talked about some things they’re trying to do to even improve upon the attendance rate.”
Kitchell says the presentation of the school improvement plans allows board members to learn about the work taking place within the schools to improve test scores, that might otherwise go unnoticed.
