The City of Plymouth may soon be asking residents to move garbage cans away from the street, once trash has been collected.
Ken Mackey lives on 5th Street near Lake Avenue. He told the board of works Monday that many residents simply leave their garbage can in place near the street and take trash out to it. “Our neighborhood isn’t the greatest-looking neighborhood anyway, but this just makes it look like an alley,” he said. “My road don’t look like a road no more. Some people put gargoyles at the end of their driveway. My neighborhood puts trash cans, and I don’t want it.” Not only does that affect the road’s appearance, but Mackey said it also makes driving difficult on the narrow road.
One issue raised by board members is whether the trash cans are kept on the city’s right-of-way or on residents’ property. They asked City Attorney Sean Surrisi to research how other cities deal with the issue. Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt said that it would be nice to have an ordinance in place, but noted it would be hard to enforce.
