The Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office is looking to keep its options open, when it comes to choosing a lab to examine drugs in criminal cases. On Monday, the county commissioners voted to reduce the county’s two-year contract with Great Lakes Labs to a one-year contract at the same price.
Prosecutor Nelson Chipman said the change will allow him to study the possibility of saving some money by using the Indiana State Police lab, instead of Great Lakes. “As it is, the usage rate comes out to about $508 per exam, and that includes the availability of coming to court and testifying to some of these exhibits, which I believe is a fair price.,” he said. “But if there is the availability of utilizing what the state police provide for no direct charge, we should look closer at that.”
The county commissioners approved the shortened contract unanimously.
