School Board Member Killed in Toll Road Crash

toll-road-crashA fiery tractor-trailer crash on the Indiana Toll Road has claimed the life of a local school board member. It happened Monday in LaGrange County.

Preliminary investigation indicates a semi driven by 21-year-old Edward Larson of Flint, Mich. was stopped on the outer shoulder of the Toll Road and was struck by another eastbound truck, driven by 53-year-old Daniel Zeiger of Bremen.

His truck continued east and hit another eastbound truck, driven by 34-year-old Winston Sample, Jr. of New Orleans. The force of the crash sent both trucks into the center median, according to the Indiana State Police.

Zeiger’s truck caught fire after the collision. He was transporting gasoline. The crash shut down both east and westbound lanes of the toll road for several hours.

Zeiger was pronounced dead at the scene. He served on the Union-North School Board, where he was elected an at-large member in 2012 and recently ran unopposed.

Sample was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital. Larson was not injured.
