Argos Community Schools is once again dipping into its cash reserves to make up for a shortfall in General Fund revenues. On Monday, the Marshall County Council appropriated just under $259,000 from the corporation’s cash balance, at the recommendation of the Argos School Board.
Argos Schools Director of Finance Jennifer Lee told council members that the move will balance the corporation’s budget as 2016 comes to an end. “You do your budget so early, and things change throughout the year,” she explained. “So, unfortunately, you have to kind of re-look at your budget several times during the year, especially with the ADM count two times a year. That causes our revenue to change twice a year. So some things are unexpected and our revenue did come in a little bit less than we were anticipating. We were down, I believe, around 17 students.”
The increase actually involved two separate measures from the Marshall County Council. One of them appropriated $350,581 for various line items in the General Fund, while the other one offset that with $91,680 in reductions elsewhere. That left the net increase at $258,901.
