It’s Rail Safety Week in Indiana, following a declaration from Governor Mike Pence. Indiana State Police and the Indiana Department of Transportation are working with local police and railroads to raise awareness of the dangers of disobeying railroad crossing laws, as well as trespassing on railroad property. According to Indiana Operation Lifesaver, police and railroad officials will be keeping an eye on railroad crossings and checking for trespassers throughout the week.
Last year, there were 13 trespasser deaths and 12 deaths caused by railroad crossing collisions. Indiana currently ranks fourth in the nation for railroad crossing collisions.
Additionally, Indiana Operation Lifesaver is partnering with programs in four other states to create the first ever Midwest Rail Safety Week.
