The City of Plymouth plans to close the Jefferson Street railroad crossing starting Monday morning. Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt told the Board of Works this week that Pioneer Railroad has scheduled repairs for the Jefferson Street crossing.
He says the crossing will close to traffic around 8:30 Monday morning. Once Pioneer Railroad makes the necessary repairs, the city will be responsible for repaving the area. Marquardt says the crossing should reopen by Wednesday, weather permitting.
Other street and sidewalk projects were also discussed during Monday’s meeting. City Engineer Rick Gaul says the city’s Community Crossings work will soon be getting underway. “We’ll have these [projects] done this fall, but we’ve also got another group we’re doing next spring,” he said. “So we broke them up into two different sections. Basically, on the group that goes into next spring, we had to wait because they’re micro-surface and the temperature.”
Board member Mike Delp was concerned about what effect Indiana communities’ Community Crossings projects will have on prices for Plymouth. “I’m just concerned about pricing on it because I think the market may be flooded, but we’ll see,” he said.
The Plymouth Common Council made some funding arrangements for Community Crossings, during its meeting Monday. Council members established a “Local Road and Bridge Matching Grant Fund” as directed by the state and appropriated nearly $2 million into that fund. That money consists of the $911,401 received in grant funds from the state, as well as the local match, which was made up of just under $445,000 in Rainy Day Funds and just over $555,000 in funds from the special Local Option Income Tax distribution.
