Marshall County Economic Development Director Jerry Chavez says the announcement of a snack producer locating in Plymouth is a tremendous investment.

The comments follow information released by the IEDC and the governor’s office that Pretzel’s Inc. will be investing millions of dollars to equipment and properly run the recently constructed Plymouth shell building. They company intends to hire about 65 workers by 2020.

Chavez says the company has a long history of being a good corporate citizen.

“It kind of gets us back to a little bit of our roots in terms of company ownership,” says Chavez. “Operating, not only in Marshall County, but in Plymouth. It gets us back to a hometown feel for businesses made at a local level.”

This is the second location for the Bluffton-based company.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered up to $350-thousand in conditional tax credits based on the company’s performance over the coming years as it expands its operations into Plymouth.

The MCEDC has plans to construct additional shell buildings using Regional Cities funds. Chavez says work is being completed now that will ultimately determine where the next shell building will reside.

He says he feels comfortable there’s room for a number of shell buildings in Marshall County.

“It’s a good strategy,” says Chavez. “I think if you peel the onion away, I think you’ll notice that probably 95% of the tours and proposals that we send out on a monthly basis, it goes to companies that are looking for existing buildings.”

The City of Plymouth will also consider an incentive package for Pretzel’s Inc. at the local level. Details of that process will be made public later this month.

The company was started in 1978 and says they offer 900 varieties of pretzels.
