This November, Indiana students will be taking part in a mock election. But before that, some of them will have the chance to play an active role in a gubernatorial town hall meeting.
Students taking part in the Indiana Kids’ Election will have the opportunity to submit questions for the September 27 meeting with candidates John Gregg, Eric Holcomb, and Rex Bell. On top of that, students from selected high schools will attend the event at Lawrence North High School, while others will be able to watch a live webcast.
Indiana Kids’ Election is sponsored by the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office, and the Indiana Department of Education. The mock election program gives students around the state the chance to elect their own president, governor, and senator this November.
According to the organization, the program is based on the idea that since voting is usually done out of habit, it’s important to develop that habit early. Indiana Kids’ Election is also designed to help schools meet the state’s requirement to educate students in grades six through 12 on the election process.
Locally, students in the Culver Community Schools Corporation, John Glenn School Corporation, Eastern Pulaski School Corporation, West Central School Corporation, and Bremen Public Schools are taking part in the mock election.
This year’s Indiana Kids’ Election has been named an official Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project.
