The Marshall County Clerk’s office is joining the times and planning to accept credit card payments.
Clerk Debbie Vandemark says her offices do not take credit cards at the counter, but would like to implement the service due to most residents paying with plastic as opposed to paper money anymore.
Vandemark says their current services don’t allow them to do that.
“For years the Clerk’s office has been using govpay and we’ve only been taking one or two transactions per week,” says Vandemark. “It has not been a very user-friendly vendor.”
To replace govpay, the Clerk’s office is recommending the county begin using the completely different service paygov. The replacement vendor is already used by several Marshall County offices with relatively positive reviews.
Vandemark requested that the county commissioners on Monday cancel their existing contract and sign a new one allowing them to begin processing payments more efficiently.
“It’s three-percent of the transaction for a fee,” says Vandemark. “If the transaction is under $33, it’s $1.”
The Marshall County Commissioners inquired about the cancellation costs, but the clerk said one of the biggest positives is that the county does not have to worry about fraudulent transactions.
Paygov is used in 35 states across the country and in 1-thousand municipalities in those states.
