Veteran’s Memorial Forest in Marshall County will be getting a bit of a facelift in the near future.

During Monday morning’s Marshall County Commissioner’s meeting, it was proposed to clean-up the entrance of the forest off of 14th Road and develop a parking space for visitors. It’s part of an Eagle Scout project being undertaken by Daniel Stauffer from Troupe 257.

“This is the idea for the parking space,” says Stauffer. “We’re going to, like I said, clear up the entrance more, to get cars in there easier. The parking space will be in an open area along the tree line.”

It is considered by the Boy Scout to be overgrown. Cleaning up the entrance to the forest will be the top priority not only for the project, but to make the 14th road entrance more visible. State Road 17 also has an entrance into the forest, but will be left alone for this project.

Stauffer will be partnering with the Marshall County Highway Department to obtain sufficient gravel to construct the parking lot. A trailhead sign will be constructed to complete the updated look of the entrance.

Stauffer says he will also build a fence.

“The goal for the fence is to stop cars from going back into the area and signal to people where they can start on the trail,” says Stauffer.

Part of the Eagle Scout effort is paving the way for future projects.

The Marshall County Commissioners gave approval to the project. Communication between Stauffer and the Highway Department will take place in the near future to begin the project.
