Marshall County will soon be participating in a program that looks to financially assist local veterans.
The county Recorder’s Office, along with the Veteran’s Services Office, explained the benefits veterans could receive through the “Honor Rewards” program.
It’s offered through a software company contracting with the Recorder’s office, and is designed to provide veterans with an identification card that can be shown to receive perks from local businesses. Marshall County Recorder Marlene Mahler says nothing goes back to the businesses.
“The only thing that’s on the ID card is their name and what branch of service,” says Mahler. “They just have to show that, they don’t do anything. There’s a sign-up sheet that they have to get the card, only goes to my software company, it’s never shared with anyone else.”
About 19 counties in Indiana are already using the Honor Rewards program. Sign-up will be completed in the Recorder’s Office, Veteran’s Service Office, or online once its in effect.
A percentage-off a product or service is usually designated for the veteran taking advantage of the program. Mahler says there’s no cost to the county for the software provider to contact local businesses.
“It may be restaurants, it may be Wal-Mart, it may be the guy that washes your car, a tire changing place. Any place,” says Mahler. “There’s a list of some of the things that other counties have put on.”
The Marshall County Commissioners on Monday morning approved implementing the program. A contract will first have to be approved between the County and the Software Company before veterans can begin using the service.
