A recent mugging on the Greenway Trail in Plymouth has prompted the City’s Mayor to consider some potential security options.
The incident occurred behind Riverside Intermediate School when the victim described being jumped by a man wearing a helmet. The suspect exited a wooded area and allegedly struck the victim with a baseball bat. Two other men participated in the incident, eventually stealing the victim’s wallet, according to the incident report.
Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter says the investigation is in good hands.
“There’s always the other side of the story,” says Senter. “From what I understand, that’s coming out right now – the other side of the story is. I would say that it is probably something that the public should not have to worry about.”
The Greenway Trail connects a few parks in the city and is used by residents for walking and exercising.
For many years, the Plymouth Parks Department has funded a security officer to provide protection in the City’s nine parks, including the trail. Right now, an officer is on patrol seven days per week, but Mayor Senter says there is more that can be done.
Safety concerns following the incident have prompted suggestions such as a bike patrol on the trail, or increasing the presence of the regular park security. Utilizing the services of the Plymouth Police Department in the area could also be used to quell concerns.
Senter says that although the sun is setting later, some of the wooded areas can get dark sooner in the evening.
“Whether there are criminals or not, I’m out there,” says Senter. “Or whether there’s something like this that has brought this to our attention, you still should be aware and you still should always have another person with you when you’re walking on the trails back there. That’s just common sense.”
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The victim in the mugging was treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and released later that night.
