The City of Plymouth is once again discussing the signage at a local ice cream parlor. Last year, the placement of a sign at Mooney’s Ice Cream led to discussions with both the Plymouth Plan Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals. Now, electrical violations have brought the issue before the Board of Works.
Plymouth Building Commissioner Keith Hammonds told board members Monday that the business was told to make repairs to the conduit running to the sign. He says they fixed the problem before the deadline, but used the wrong materials. “They changed the conduit to a schedule 40, which is in violation. It’s supposed to be schedule 80,” he said. “We then contacted him. I informed him that if he doesn’t have it corrected by our next meeting, I will come to the board and request that we do it ourselves.”
However, board member Jeff Houin asked if the city could simply disconnect the sign’s power, instead, “I don’t like the idea of the city incurring the expense of doing the work and then trying to collect that from him. If we can just shut it off until he does get it done and just let him know that he can’t have electricity to the sign until it meets code. And that way, we’re not trying to chase more money or incur the time and expense for the city.”
Board member Mike Delp said it’s time the issue is resolved, “It’s been dragging on long enough. We’ve just got to take a stand here somewhere and put some teeth into it.”
Mooney’s Ice Cream has until May 23 to make the required change, before the city takes action to disconnect the sign’s electricity.
