The United Way of Marshall County is promoting a service for which many are unaware they even qualify.
Any American earning $62-thousand or less is able to use the United Way’s free tax filing service, “MyFreeTaxes.” The online program allows both state and federal tax preparation and filing services, and is available in every state. The service is supported by a grant from the Wal-Mart foundation.
Apart from the online version, the United Way also provides free in-person tax filing assistance through multiple preparation locations.
The problem, according to surveys, is that upwards of 70-percent of those filing a state and federal tax return are unaware they are able to use the service. The United Way says that by taking advantage of “MyFreeTaxes,” billions of dollars can be saved in consumers’ pockets. Those monies can help boost local economies, according to a press release.
The United Way suggests that those who are able to pay for tax preparation services should consider taking advantage of the offering. Those with income eligibility often have limited awareness of the available tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, or the Child Tax Credit.
