Plymouth May Allow Retiring Firefighters and Paramedics to Keep Helmets and Boots

Plymouth IndianaThe City of Plymouth may soon consider a policy to allow retiring firefighters and paramedics to keep their helmets and boots. During Monday’s meeting, Common Council member Gary Cook requested the city create an official policy to give firefighters and paramedics the opportunity to purchase their helmets and boots for a dollar.

It’s modeled after action taken last year by the Common Council and Board of Works to allow police officers to buy their service weapons upon retirement. Mayor Mark Senter and attorney Sean Surrisi agreed start working on a policy.

The request came after it was announced during Monday’s Board of Works meeting that Assistant Fire Chief George Cook will be retiring in May after more than 30 years with the Plymouth Fire Department. The Board of Works agreed to let Fire Chief Rodney Miller start looking for a new assistant chief, so he’ll be able to make a provisional offer of employment by the time Cook’s retirement becomes official.
