Holiday Cooking May Lead to Fire Hazards, Agencies Provide Safety Tips

fireThanksgiving brings out the amateur chef in many families, but may also bring about potential fire hazards.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, along with the American Red Cross, have provided safety tips while preparing your Thanksgiving meal. According to information provided by the Red Cross, preparation and a few simple rules can help avoid burning the turkey and burning down your home.

Checking on your food regularly while cooking and using a timer can avoid unnecessary over cooking. Keeping the kitchen a “kid free zone” can also prevent possible burns and spilled grease. Loose clothing and cooking utensils are also recommended to be kept away from stove top heat.

If you’re using a turkey fryer, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security advises that the cooking process be completed outside, and off a deck or other wooden surface near your home. Overfilling the fryer with oil is considered another common mistake that can lead to fire hazards.

Ensuring that grease has been properly cleaned from the site and installing a working smoke detector are also recommended.
