Guided Starke County Forest Tours Scheduled Saturday

news-2Enjoy a guided tour of the Starke County Forest on Saturday, Oct. 17. This is the first time since 2011, when forester Bruce Wakeland donated the 129-acres of land near the Starke/Marshall County line to the county in the form of a trust, that he’s showing members of the public around the property.

He will share information about the various types of trees, wetlands and habitat at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. CDT and describe the various areas available to members of the public throughout the year. Saturday’s attractions include migratory sandhill cranes, burr marigolds at the edge of the marsh and the panoramic view of the area from the observation tower.

Samples of roasted chestnuts, cider, coffee and water will also be available. In addition to the guided tours, visitors are welcome to explore the three miles of trails on their own. Comfortable walking shoes and appropriate fall attire are encouraged.

Tours will start, and drinks will be provided just inside the public entrance to the forest at 10625 Division Road between Starke County Roads 1025 and 1100 East. The forest is located a mile north of State Road 8 east and a mile west of the Starke/Marshall County line.
