Plymouth Schools Review Possible Policy Changes

The Plymouth School Board has decided to acknowledge that the teacher of a dual credit Advanced Placement course is currently without a license.

Scott Michael was hired to instruct students through a couple of courses. Michael, however, does not have a license to teach one of his courses on renewable energy. He does, however, have a license to teach in general. The School Board felt it best to acknowledge the difference in an open meeting.

Superintendent Dan Tyree says he may have to go for some training for the license.

“We can send the minutes down to Indianapolis and they will give him a license to teach the dual credit renewable energy class,” says Tyree.

After the acknowledgement, Michael is anticipated to receive a license to teach the course from the state of Indiana. Students currently enrolled in the class will not see their dual credit status affected.

The School Board on Tuesday also considered a few new policies. Some of the policy changes involve changes to their conflict of interest disclosures.

Assistant Superintendent Andy Hartley says other changes are designed to put the school corporation in line with changes in state statute.

“Most of these reflect changes that were made in statute,” says Hartley. “There were a couple of language adjustments as well. I’ll bring this back next month for final approval.”

No action was taken on Tuesday night as the policies were on first reading.

The School Board also indemnified a former employee from allegedly violating board policy. Tyree said the employee was exonerated of the charges, allowing the school corporation to make the indemnification.
