Culver-Union Township Public Library Hosts Program on Andrew Carnegie

The Culver-Union Township Public Library is looking at the legacy of Andrew Carnegie at a program Saturday.

Library Accounting Manager Jim Faulkner is leading a presentation called, “Gospel or Tainted Money? – Andrew Carnegie’s Controversial Philanthropy.” It’s part of the centennial celebration for the library, which was built with money from Carnegie in 1915.

Carnegie funded more than 2,500 public libraries, but Faulkner says these efforts were met with controversy at the time and many communities decided they didn’t want to accept a free library from Carnegie. During the presentation, Faulkner will also discuss what motives drove Carnegie to donate so much of his fortune to charitable purposes.

Saturday’s presentation is free, and it will be held in the library’s large meeting room at 10:30 a.m.
