Additional charges have been filed against the Plymouth man who was caring for a toddler who died Saturday night at a Fort Wayne Hospital.
Investigators with the Plymouth Police Department say 20-year-old Shane Weeding was watching 2-year-old Serenity Wilson on Friday when she sustained what was ultimately a fatal head injury. He’s now charged with aggravated battery resulting in death. It’s a Level 1 felony and carries a penalty of between 20 and 40 years in prison. Weeding also faces Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent and possession of marijuana with prior convictions charges.
Serenity’s mother, 24-year-old Krysti M. Lavanway of Plymouth is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death as a Level 1 felony. Both are jailed on $100,000 cash bonds.
Police say Serenity was unconscious when Lavanway brought her to the hospital in Plymouth Friday afternoon. They responded to the hospital due to the extent of the child’s injuries and determined they occurred earlier in the day. Serenity was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne, where she died Saturday night.
The Allen County Coroner ruled her death a homicide due to blunt force trauma.
