The Centennial Park Tennis Court project took a big step forward this week. No comments were offered during a Monday night public hearing on the establishment of a dedicated fund for the project. The city has pledged $750,000 toward the construction of new tennis courts. Half of the money will come from the capital improvement fund and the other half from cumulative capital development.
Plans call for new courts to be built on the site of the existing ones. Earlier this year the city engineer worked with FEMA officials to have the site removed from the flood plain. The current tennis courts are 40 years old, and repairs are cost prohibitive. Funds for the new courts will come from the city, Plymouth schools and private donors. The project carries an estimated cost of $1.5 million. City officials hope to firm up that cost early next year once plans are finalized and let for bid. Work on the new courts could start next spring if funds allow.
