Agencies Partner for Indiana Rail Safety Week

It’s Rail Safety Week in Indiana.

Between now and Saturday, agencies around the state will be working together to raise awareness about the dangers of railroad crossings and trespassing on railroad property. Indiana Operation Lifesaver has scheduled blitzes with law enforcement agencies throughout Indiana, and police and railroad special agents will be watching crossings and checking railroads for trespassers.

Indiana is ranked 4th nationally for railroad crossing collisions. In 2014, the state had 122 crashes, injuring 50 people and killing nine. Additionally, there were ten deaths involving people trespassing on railroads, as well as 11 injuries.

Indiana Rail Safety Week is a partnership involving Indiana Operation Lifesaver, the Indiana State Police, the Indiana Department of Transportation, local law enforcement, and railroad companies. To learn more, visit Operation Lifesaver’s website, www.oli.org.
