The Plymouth Board of Works and Common Council will consider a compromise tonight to allow a recently retired city police officer to keep his department-issued handgun. They were prepared to declare it surplus property and gift it to Ted Brown at their last meeting, until a member of the public questioned the legality of doing so. City attorney Sean Surrisi recommended they table the matter so additional research could be done.
Tonight both bodies will consider an ordinance to allow retiring police officers to purchase their weapons from the city. Brown retired from the Plymouth Police Department after more than 20 years of service to take over as the director of school safety for the Plymouth School Corporation.
The board of works meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the Plymouth Common Council meeting.
