According to the Center for Women and Families, within this country more than 3 women are murdered by their significant other on a daily basis. The Center also reports that studies suggest up to 10 million children are exposed to domestic violence annually. Statistics about domestic abuse are disheartening and hard to hear, but the truth of the matter is these things are happening. Fortunately a place exists where the battered can come to recover, the Heminger House in Plymouth.
This Saturday, advocates and bikers alike are invited to participate in the Heminger House’s “Brake the Cycle of Violence” benefit at the American Legion on 1040 East Jefferson Street. Registration begins at 10 am and the ride will commence at 11 am. Riders will be required to sign a waiver and pay a $25 fee for themselves and an additional $10 for passengers. The motorcycles will ride for about 80 miles and will begin in Plymouth and pass through Knox, Bass Lake, Culver and Rochester before returning to Plymouth at approximately 3 pm. The benefit will feature an auction as well. Individuals who just want to attend the benefit and auction can pay $10.
The Heminger House website defines domestic violence as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an individual. It goes on to explain that abuse can happen anytime and to anyone regardless of gender, relationship status, race, age or socioeconomic class. This event is being held in hopes of putting an end to battery and abuse of all kinds. This benefit is open to all members of the community, not just bikers and bike lovers, but to any individual looking to break the cycle of violence. If you wish to get involved or if you’re reaching out for assistance contact executive director Diane Fisher at 584-936-SAFE(7233).
