Third Grade Students Encouraged to Enter Essay Contest

Third grade students across Indiana are encouraged to interview county government officials as part of an essay contest. April is National County Government Month. The Association of Indiana Counties is sponsoring the”Counties Moving Indiana Forward: The Keys are Transportation and Infrastructure.”

Students should ask questions about the types of infrastructure counties build and maintain and write a one-page essay. They can focus on roads, bridges, drainage projects or other infrastructure. Students are encouraged to talk to county commissioners, council members, highway engineers, supervisors or surveyors about how infrastructure is built, maintained and funded.

Submissions can be types or handwritten and will be judged on how well the students discuss the county’s role in building and maintaining infrastructure. Specifically they should explain the types of projects counties do and how they do them.

Entries need to be postmarked by April 15, 2015. The Association of Indiana Counties will select a winner from each of the state’s six regions. Each winner will receive $100. Find more information about the contest online at https://www.indianacounties.org/.
