Amid Major Data Breaches, BBB Advocates for Protections

The Better Business Bureau is reminding Americans to protect themselves from having personal and sensitive information stolen.

The message is in response to a major data breach at Anthem Insurance. According to a press release, hackers stole personal identifying information from both current and former customers. Items taken include names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth.

To help protect consumers, the Better Business Bureau has made a few suggestions to keep information safe. Taking preemptive action to freeze credit reports and participating in credit monitoring services was cited as key in protecting your information.

The group also advised Americans to stay vigilant with their credit reports. The Federal Trade Commission also offers online resources to victims.

Besides consumers who may have been affected, businesses can also take steps to ensure information safety. Resources are offered through the Better Business Bureau website to help develop and implement a security plan.
