INDOT Wraps Up Road Construction Season

INDOT-logo-150x131Motorists on Indiana’s highways will enjoy a holiday travel season free from road construction. INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield says most projects are on hold until spring.

Winter temperatures generally do not allow for paving and lane striping, and most asphalt and concrete plants close this time of year,” Wingfield tells MAX 98.3 News.

He notes earth moving, demolition and bridge work may continue through the winter on multi-year projects as weather permits. INDOT contractors in parts of the state cut trees during the winter and early spring months to avoid impacts to endangered Indiana bat populations. Road construction will resume in the spring as temperatures and soil conditions allow.

Meanwhile, Wingfield says INDOT contractors will pull back barrels and barricades to the safest extent possible for peak holiday travel periods and through the winter. Restored shoulders allow drivers to correct themselves if they hit slick spots and provide room to store plowed snow.
