Inmate Programs Will Soon be Expanded at the Marshall County Jail

In a recent media advisory, Marshall County Sheriff Matthew Hassel, in collaboration with Marshall County Community Corrections, proudly announced the expansion of current Inmate Programs offered at the County Jail.

The newly introduced Marshall County Jail Chemical Addictions Program (MCJCAP) aims to give men and women struggling with addictions a second chance. The program will incorporate existing Moral Reconation Therapy with the Smart Recovery Substance Abuse Program and Fatherhood Initiative Program as well as group and individual life skills coaching. Community Corrections Clients Complete Moral Reconation Therapy

Six Marshall County Community Correction clients recently completed Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT).

The group was recognized in a ceremony in Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 with Judge Robert O. Bowen presiding on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Shady Rest Home Committee to Hold Public Input Session

The members of the Shady Rest Home Committee met with Gregg Erickson and his wife, Kelly, to go over the business plan for a proposed addiction recovery program at the county-owned Shady Rest Home in Plymouth.

The business plan outlined expenditures and revenues and more information about a structured recovery program for drug or alcohol offenders recommended to the program by Marshall County Community Corrections. The program, called “David’s Choice”, would assist recovering addicts for six to nine months on getting a job, completing treatment, conducting community service, and obtaining other life and job skills.

Information Tidbits from the Marshall County Commissioners

The Marshall County Commissioners discussed a few items Monday.

Highway Superintendent Jason Peters will work with a property owner on 2B Road concerning a drainage issue off the road. An investigation will be held into who is responsible for replacing the tile in that area as it appears to have failed. Further discussion will be held during the commissioners’ next meeting on Monday, Dec. 4.

The commissioners approved a grant request from Marshall County Community Corrections Director Ward Byers to apply for grant funds for Fiscal Year 2019. He said the budget of around $403,100 is for the jail treatment program, community corrections and the prosecutor’s felony diversion program. The council also previously approved this request.

Marshall County to Try New Treatment Approach for Domestic Violence Offenders

Prosecutor Nelson Chipman and Community Corrections Director Ward Byers announced the new approach in a press release Friday. They say it’s “an evidence based cognitive behavioral program designed to enhance awareness of thoughts and belief patterns to change behavior to one of equality and acceptance.”

The hope is that the treatment will do a better job of stopping offenders from committing more acts of domestic violence in the future. Many Marshall County Services Available to Recovering Addicts

September serves as National Recovery Month, which celebrates the gains made by those fighting addiction. While Marshall County continues to battle an ever-growing opiate problem, there are also many success stories to celebrate.

According to Community Corrections Director Ward Byers, through collaborative efforts with criminal justice partners and local treatment providers many client recoveries have been reported. Marshall County Community Corrections provides assistance with substance abuse recovery by hosting a support group ever Monday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Life Enrichment Center in Plymouth. The Smart Recovery Substance Abuse support group is a free service open to the public called Discover the Power of Choice. Continue reading →
