The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) is recommending a substantial reduction to NIPSCO’s request for a $368.7 million electric base rate increase. Instead, the OUCC’s analysis shows that an increase of $203.2 million is warranted based on the case’s evidence and applicable law.

More than 25 years have gone by since NIPSCO has increased natural gas base rates, but that may change.
NIPSCO along with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission are looking to increase natural gas base rates as the cost to comply with state and federal safety standards has increased. According to a NIPSCO press release, the company has made additional investments in its aging gas system to improve service to 820,000 customers while maintaining more than 17,800 miles of pipelines.
High temperatures and humidity are baking much of the central United States this week, sending the thermometer to above 100 degrees in some places for the first time this year. The National Weather Service calls it a heat dome, which is a high pressure system that has pushed conditions to their hottest point this summer so far. Continue reading
