The State of Indiana has more than tripled the amount of money allocated to food banks. The Indiana State Department of Agriculture says a total of a million dollars will be distributed to 11 food banks, under the General Assembly’s biennial budget.

Making sure Hoosiers have access to food as the pandemic continues remains a priority for state officials. Families with kids attending class virtually who would normally get free or reduced-price meals at school will be able to get that funding on a Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer card.

Locally, the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, which serves Marshall, Starke, and four other counties, was given almost $35,000. Food Finders Food Bank, whose 16-county territory includes Pulaski and Fulton counties, has gotten nearly $28,000. The funding is part of the state budget approved by the Indiana General Assembly.

Food Finders Food Bank, whose 16-county territory includes Pulaski and Fulton counties, has gotten nearly $29,000.
The 2016 “Map the Meal Gap” report shows there still too many Hoosiers who go hungry. The annual study by the group Feeding America details food insecurity rates in every county and congressional district in the country. It found 15 percent of Indiana’s population is “food insecure.” Emily Weikert Bryant of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry says that’s over a million people. Continue reading
