Bremen’s School Board members were brought up to speed on several things going on in the corporation at their regular public meeting on Wednesday.
Superintendent Jim White told the board that the operations budget was in the negative at the moment but the school’s tax draw will come soon which will rectify that. He also told the board that teacher appreciation grants would be going out soon and that the current enrollment at the school is 1,468.
White said gym “A” would be repainted over the summer after receiving a good quote for the project.
He also informed the board that the Town of Bremen would be undertaking a project on Grant St. adjacent to the school. The project will include milling the road, upgrading the water mains and replacing the sidewalks surrounding the school. White said that completion of the project would be “painful” in the fall but when finished would be worth the inconvenience.
High School Principal Andrew Rohde updated the board on the state’s new requirements for graduation.
Students will now be offered three “pathway seals” students can add to the regular diploma. The rules also allow students to complete more work experience or more rigorous academic requirements to earn a second “plus” tier of each seal. The revamped diploma requirements will go into effect for all Indiana students by 2028-29, but schools could adopt the revised requirements as early as 2025-26.
He also said that the P.E. requirements had gone down to two credits instead of three, but the school planned to offer other courses in the discipline, such as officiating, to keep students involved.
Athletic Director Justin Grubbs updated the board on the success of fall sports at Bremen.
The board inquired about the possibility of allowing all students into athletic contests for free. Grubbs said that the work for that was underway, but currently, the department relies on the gate at events to pay for athletic teams. He said it would take about $15,000 to make admission free to students.
The resurfacing of the track will take place after this year’s track season. White told the board that the goal for the project is to be complete by football season in the fall.
