Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board Discuss Projects

The Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board members reviewed several projects that have been in the discussion stages for a few months.

A canoe/kayak launch is still in the works however it is hung up on a federal regulation.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources could provide some funding for the project, but the Army Corp of Engineers has deemed the river “non-navigable” waters.  On the Yellow River the only “navigable waters” were located south of Plymouth.

Another question would be who would be responsible for maintenance in a proposed launch area.

While the launch is still on the table it will involve further discussions with the DNR and other agencies.

Board President Greg Hildebrand also gave an update on the possibility of an ADA-compliant trail in the Memorial Forest.

He said that government agencies willing to fund such projects wanted to see them grouped with other similar ADA projects and several others are in process around the area including one at Culver’s Lake Maxinkuckee and at the Marshall County Fairgrounds. Hildebrand said he hoped that the project at the Memorial Forest could be combined with those in grant requests.
