There will be a change in the town of Culver’s golf cart ordinance.
The town council addressed the issue in their regular meeting on Tuesday and decided with an eye to further discussions. Town attorney Jim Clevenger spoke to the council about a need to amend the current ordinance to add remedies should a golf cart user be non-compliant.
Clevenger put up a definition for discussion outlining three violations of the ordinance, or a state criminal violation or at law enforcement discretion would immediately revoke the privilege of driving the cart for one year or longer.
Some discussion ensued about whether the wording with “…the discretion of law enforcement…” was fully necessary since the violations and penalties were clearly spelled out in the ordinance.
Later in the meeting, several patrons added their support for the change in the ordinance due to dangerous behavior by drivers they had witnessed in their neighborhood. One suggestion was also added to provide signage on the street or through an insert in the city water bill reminding people of the ordinance and the changes.
Discussion of a work session to hammer out details of the ordinance before passage was changed slightly to passing the ordinance to put the penalties in place, and then having a work session for discussion on any other changes.
The fact that the peak season of golf cart usage has already begun made the passage more urgent.
The council gave a unanimous vote for the ordinance and made plans for a work session at a later date.
