Plymouth School Board Looks into Senate Bill 486

The Plymouth School Board members were asked to look into Senate Bill 486 and to add it on to future agendas for discussion.

SB 486 would repeal teacher’s training requirements, but would also require that the education department establish or license the use of an online platform that would provide the information and training regarding this training.

The bill would also remove certain requirements for annual performance evaluations for certified employees. It amends requirements to be considered for a probationary teacher or a professional teacher. The bill also provides that after a school corporation has assigned an evaluator to perform a certified employee evaluation, the certified employee can request an evaluator.

Other subjects found in this bill include the removal of provisions that require a school employer to discuss certain items with the exclusive representative, such as Teacher’s Unions. It also removes provisions that require a public meeting to hear public testimony before school employers and employees privately negotiate certain collective bargaining matters.

The legislative council would also be required to assign to an appropriate interim study committee the task of studying current school assessments in an effort to reduce and streamline assessments for Indiana students.

Senate Bill 486 is authored by senators Linda Rogers, Jeff Raatz and Stacey Donato. The Bill has been passed by committee and was sent to appropriation.
