More than 35,000 Hoosiers have gotten a third dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Indiana Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lindsay Weaver says that includes those who are immunocompromised and those who became eligible for a booster dose last week.
The booster dose is available to individuals 65 and older, those 50 and up who have underlying health conditions, and those 18 and up with underlying health conditions based on their individual risks and benefits.
But many others who are 18 or older also qualify, based on where they work. “According to new guidance from the CDC, these people include health care workers, first responders, staff in congregate care settings, teachers, daycare workers, food and agricultural workers, and individuals who work in manufacturing, correctional settings, public transit, grocery stores, and others,” Weaver said during a press conference Wednesday.
Weaver said Moderna is seeking FDA approval for booster doses, while Pfizer is seeking approval to make the vaccine available to kids as young as five. Weaver encouraged parents to start discussing options with their pediatricians.
