Some Bourbon sidewalks will soon be getting upgrades. The town council recently approved a quote from Hensley & Son to repair or replace three sections of sidewalk for almost $20,000.
That includes the sidewalk on the east side of South Main Street from the railroad tracks to Jackson Street, a half-block section of North Harris Street near Sunset Street, and a portion of East Sunset Street near Thayer Street.
“We choose the sidewalks this way because of the Safe Routes to School and plus Main Street, there’s kids walking from South Main up through,” Street Superintendent Roger Terry explained. “Usually, we do blocks at a time. This time, we’re just doing sections because there’s sections that need replaced up at the school, too. So also, a good thing for us is Community Crossings Grant moneys, it also includes sidewalks in that, so that’s why we just spread out from what we do on our own.”
Town officials had originally proposed six sections of sidewalk, but had to cut it back due to high costs.
Council members also agreed to pay Jones Petrie Rafinski up to $8,940 for engineering work for the next round of Community Crossings paving projects. Terry said he and Clerk-Treasurer Kim Berger have already put together a list of proposed streets. That’s expected to be discussed at the next council meeting.
