The Town of Bourbon is looking to make a major upgrade to its trail system. Ward Byers recently told the rest of the town council that Bourbon has the chance to get $888,000 through Marshall County Crossroads’ Stellar Community designation after a project in Bremen fell through.
“That trail itself would put some additional walking paths in the park,” Byers explained. “It would then connect down town Center Street which would be considered a park trail, which would connect Westwood Park to our park up here and then also would have a Safe Routes to Schools, which would be an upgrade of the sidewalks on Liberty Street to the school property.”
Bourbon’s local match would be $160,000 between now and fiscal year 2024. Byers said the town might be able to take that out of the money that’s typically budgeted for park equipment. The town council agreed to commit to the local match, to get the Stellar funding provided by the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Byers said the idea is that the trails will eventually extend out from each community and grow into a county-wide trail network.
