Opioid overdose reversal medication will soon be available 24 hours a day in every Indiana county. Governor Holcomb announced Friday that the state is partnering with Overdose Lifeline to buy 215 “NaloxBox” units. It’s is a hard acrylic box containing six to eight doses of naloxone that can be mounted on the outside of a building. Each county will get at least one.
Any business or organization committed to helping Hoosiers at risk of an overdose can offer to host a NaloxBox at their facility. These community partners will have to monitor the box daily and request refills. Organizations interested in getting a NaloxBox should email Overdose Lifeline Founder and Executive Director Justin Phillips at justin@overdoselifeline.org.
The $58,000 cost of the NaloxBoxes was covered by a state opioid response grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The Governor’s Office notes that naloxone administration rates have continued to climb during the COVID-19 pandemic.
