The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the two officers involved in a fatal shooting on New Year’s Eve in Starke County. Patrolman Richard Prater has been with the Sheriff’s Department for 14 years, while Patrolman Blake Bennett has been with the department for one year and 10 months.
They allegedly shot and killed Jeffrey L. Marvin, 63, of Valparaiso, as he was driving a pickup truck towards them, after he reportedly led officers on a chase and hit multiple police vehicles.
Prater and Bennett had been placed on paid administrative leave, but are now back at work while Indiana State Police continue to investigate. Once the investigation is complete, their findings will be sent to the Starke County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
