Indiana’s first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were given to front line health care workers in Fort Wayne Monday. A physician, nurse, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, patient care tech, and environmental services tech at Parkview Health got the initial shot shortly after noon, according to the Indiana Department of Health.

Parkview and Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville were the first to get shipments. More than 50 Indiana hospitals and clinics are expected to have it by the end of the week.

For now, the vaccine will be limited to frontline health care workers who provide direct patient care, as well as residents and staff at long-term care facilities. The Indiana Department of Health says over 20,000 health care workers have already signed up to get their first dose.
