The COVID-19 emergency has prompted all in-person jury trials in Indiana to be suspended until March 1. The order was handed down by the Indiana Supreme Court Monday.
It says that in-court proceedings pose a high threat of exposure, even under strict protocols. It goes onto say that the judicial system “must take drastic measures we hoped would not be necessary,” in order to slow the spread. In a statement, Chief Justice Loretta Rush said there’s hope that 2021 will bring improved conditions, but for now, hoping is not enough.
Other court operations, including remote proceedings, are expected to continue. Courts around the state have had to modify their operations since the pandemic began in March.
