State officials are urging Hoosiers to adjust their holiday plans to avoid the spread of COVID-19. During last week’s COVID-19 press conference, Governor Holcomb warned that the virus is often spread when family members and friends let their guards down.
“Please keep your holiday gatherings in 2020 small,” the governor said. “Keep them shorter, maybe, than normal, and wear face coverings. Consider limiting your gatherings to immediate household members only or your identified small social pod. Maybe even gather outside, weather-permitting.”
State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box urged residents to stay home if possible, and, if you must travel, research your destination’s COVID-19 situation before going. “Know that there may be restrictions or requirements or quarantines when you arrive there,” Box said. “Consider the risk to yourself and others, and consider getting tested before you go and hunkering down when you get back. We don’t want to see this surge get worse because we ignored all of our precautions over Thanksgiving.”
The governor acknowledged that all of the necessary precautions will make this holiday season extra difficult. “The holiday season is a time that reminds us to be thankful and to have hope,” Holcomb added. “My hope is, maybe this year, it’s our actions that can be the best gift we can give to one another.”
State officials plan to give more COVID-19 guidance for the upcoming holidays later this week.
