Rapid COVID-19 tests may soon be more widely available in Indiana. State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box says the state got an initial shipment of about 132,000 BinaxNOW tests from the federal government this week.
“We’re working on providing training on the use of these tests and deploying these tests to facilities where they are needed the most,” Box said during an online COVID-19 update Wednesday. “These tests can give us a quick assessment of a person who has symptoms. If they come back positive, then we feel confident that the person is ill with COVID-19.”
But she says the rapid tests aren’t as sensitive as the PCR tests. That means anyone who’s symptomatic but tests negative with the rapid test should be retested using the other method.
