The John Glenn School Corporation is hoping to get more services out of its athletic training contract. The school board last week approved a contract with Beacon Medical Group, after high school officials recommended switching from St. Joseph Health System, according to Superintendent Christopher Winchell.
“There’s some additional services that are provided to us from Beacon,” Winchell explains. “One example of that is they’ll have a licensed doctor on the sideline of our football games. They’ll be providing athletic physical services on campus to our kids.”
Beacon is also promising John Glenn its own exclusive trainer, while St. Joseph would occasionally pull a trainer away to serve other schools. But Winchell says the main difference is going from about a nine-month service contract to a 12-month contract. “Really, it’s full-time services, whereas we felt we were starting to get to a point where our services with St. Joe were becoming part-time,” he says.
But the increase in services also means an increase in cost. Winchell says this year’s contract with Beacon will cost $38,000, an increase of about $10,000 from last year’s contract with St. Joseph.
