Health officials continue urging parents not to let COVID-19 concerns leave their children vulnerable to preventable diseases. The drop in immunizations given during the pandemic is still a concern nationwide, according to State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box.
“We really would be heartbroken to lose children over vaccine-preventable diseases in the middle of a pandemic, so we’re really, really focusing on that right now,” Box said during Wednesday’s COVID-19 press conference. “We’re working with the Indiana Immunization Coalition and our local health departments that also give a large bulk of our immunizations across the state.”
Box said parents of children under two years old have been especially reluctant to bring them in for their shots. She stressed that health care providers are taking precautions to keep sick kids separate from well kids.
