You’ll soon be able to find out how many people have tested positive for COVID-19 in your zip code. State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box announced Friday that Indiana plans to give zip-code-level breakdowns of positive test counts each week.
“I personally look at that as I look at some of our disparate populations or populations that I know are hit harder with this, and can focus on particular zip codes to see what those numbers are,” Box said. “And it may help some of the testing that I do, whether that is an Amish population or an African American population or whatever.”
However, the map will only show information for zip codes with at least five cases and a population of at least 1,500 people.
Box also shared some of the most recent data from the Regenstrief Institute’s analysis of almost 38,000 of Indiana COVID-19 cases. The data showed that 26 percent of those who’ve tested positive went to an emergency room, 17 percent were hospitalized, and four percent were placed in intensive care.
Box said 73 percent of those who’ve been hospitalized have since been discharged. “Of the remainder, eight percent are believed to still be hospitalized, and nearly 19 percent are known to have died while hospitalized,” she added.
More than 73 percent of Hoosiers who’ve tested positive are believed to have recovered, up from 67 percent last week.
Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Rob Carter reported an even higher recovery rate in his facilities. “Of the roughly 1,014 offenders and staff that had tested positive, 932 of those have recovered,” Carter said. “That’s over 90 percent, so we’re real happy with that. We haven’t had any COVID-related death in over two weeks, and that really good news. We’re doing quite well right now.”
Six of the 16 IDOC offenders who are confirmed to have died from COVID-19 were from the Westville Correctional Facility.
