Unemployment Spike Hits Local Area

Local unemployment rates have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Marshall County’s rate went from three percent in March to 18.7 percent in April, according to the latest report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The number of residents employed is believed to have dropped by more than 3,300.

Elkhart County, which had consistently had one of the area’s lowest unemployment rates recently, is now one of the highest at 29.3 percent.

Marshall County’s unemployment rate has now surpassed both the state and federal levels. Indiana saw a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 17.1 percent last month, while the U.S. rate was 14.4 percent.
