Many businesses may be allowed to reopen over the coming weeks, but don’t expect any school activities to resume until at least July. Governor Eric Holcomb’s Back on Track Indiana plan clarifies that all K-12 school buildings, facilities, and grounds are closed and all activities remain canceled until June 30.
Schools are currently offering remote learning through the end of the school year. Educational institutions may only be open to facilitate distance learning, do critical research, or perform essential functions.
As for graduation ceremonies, the plan calls for the Indiana Department of Education to come up with guidelines with help from the Indiana State Department of Health. Options could include virtual graduations, drive-in ceremonies, and in-person ceremonies with a limited number of participants to bring them in line with the governor’s order.
Figuring out how to approach the next school year won’t happen until Stage 5 of the governor’s plan, which won’t begin until at least July. While school activities are canceled until June 30, recreational sports leagues and tournaments may resume at Stage 4, which could start as soon as June 14.
